Dr. Gary Robertson DC
The Ketogenic (Keto) diet is a low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet. It lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, and shifts the body’s metabolism away from burning sugar to burning ketones (derived from the metabolism of fats). The Ketogenic diet offers many health benefits. It can help you lose weight and improve your health and may help people suffering from a variety of diseases including; Diabetes, Epilepsy, Obesity, Heart Disease, Cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Inflammation and Inflammatory Diseases, Autoimmune diseases and more.
A large number of studies in the scientific literature on the Ketogenic Diet have shown it to be highly effective in the treatment of a wide range of diseases that are the result of metabolic dysfunction.
These include:
Keto is Nothing New - Fasting and other dietary regimens have been used to treat epilepsy since at least 500 BC. In 1862, Banting developed a Ketogenic style diet for the treatment of obesity and in1914 Allen developed a Ketogenic diet program for the treatment of diabetes. The ketogenic diet (KD) was introduced as a treatment for epilepsy in the 1920s by Wilder (Mayo Clinic).
With the popularity of the Keto diet and the overwhelming number of online resources and 'Do-it-Yourself' programs, many people have tried the Ketogenic diet. While some have had success, unfortunately, a large number of these people have failed on the diet and to achieve their health goals. The ketogenic diet concept is simple, however, very different to a conventional diet and difficult for many people to follow.
Dr. Robertson's Healthy Keto Diet Program helps guide patients through the first 90 days of the ketogenic diet, a key to success. The program is physician-supervised and customized to meet each individuals health status and goals. It provides patients with all the education, resources and support needed to manage the transition to a ketogenic lifestyle and to succeed with their objectives. Once completed, patients will be able to easily follow the diet and lifestyle.
The objective of the program is to provide patients with the tools and resources that will empower them to achieve their long-term health goals with minimal supervision or oversight from healthcare professionals.
Keto
The work “Keto” in a Ketogenic diet comes from the fact that the diet provides the body the ability to produce small fuel molecules called “Ketones.” Ketones are an alternative fuel source for the body, typically used when blood sugar (glucose) is in short supply. Ketones are produced if you eat very few carbs and moderate amounts of protein. Carbs stimulate insulin and quickly elevate blood sugar. It is important to keep Protein intake at moderate levels as protein will also have an insulin effect and can raise blood sugar (much less that that from carbs).
The liver produces ketones from fat and these ketones then serve as a fuel source throughout the body. The brain consumes lots of energy every day, and it can’t run on fat directly. It can only run on glucose or ketones. Interestingly, ketones are the preferred fuel for the brain.
On a ketogenic diet, your entire body switches its fuel source to run primarily on ketones from burning fats. When insulin levels become very low, fat burning increases dramatically and it becomes easier to burn stored bodyfat. This is great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also other less obvious benefits, such as less hunger and a steady supply of energy and this may help keep you alert and focused.
When the body produces ketones, it enters a metabolic state called ketosis. The fastest way to get there is by fasting (i.e., not eating anything). The problem is that prolonged fasting has detrimental effects. The advantage of the Keto diet is that it puts the body into ketosis and can be eaten indefinitely. It has many of the benefits of fasting, including weight loss, without having to fast.
